English for roadside inspections and weigh stations
Most inspections follow a familiar pattern. Knowing the usual questions, and having short, clear answers ready, makes the conversation much easier.
The phrases below stay in English — that is the language the officer will use.
Questions you are likely to hear
- Where are you coming from, and where are you going?
- What are you hauling?
- Can I see your license, medical card and registration?
- Show me your logs, please.
- When did you last take a break?
- Please step out of the vehicle.
Short answers that work
- I'm coming from Dallas, Texas, and going to Memphis, Tennessee.
- I'm hauling dry freight: paper products.
- Yes, officer. Here are my license, medical card and registration.
- I'm sorry, could you repeat that more slowly, please?
At the weigh station
Signs tell you whether the station is open and whether you must pull in. There, a sign, a light or a loudspeaker may tell you to cross the scale, to park, or to bring your documents inside. If you are not sure what you were told, ask: asking is always better than guessing.
Tips
- Speak slowly and keep answers short. You do not need perfect grammar.
- Keep your documents together and in order, so you can hand them over quickly.
- If you do not understand, say so politely and ask the officer to repeat.
