Why we built Road English

Road English is a study guide for the English that truck drivers meet every day: words, phrases and short conversations, explained in your own language.

The problem

Many experienced drivers learned the trade in another language. Dispatch calls, shipper and receiver docks, fuel islands, repair shops and emergencies happen in English, often fast and with noise in the background. General English courses teach ordering coffee and talking about the weather. They rarely cover words like "bill of lading", "check call" or "pull around to door twelve".

What we are building

Road English is a study guide made for professional drivers. Each lesson groups the vocabulary and phrases around a situation from the job, such as a weigh station, a call with dispatch, a breakdown, a delivery or getting paid. English words and phrases come with audio, and the explanations are in your own language.

Why eight languages

Most people learn faster when the explanation is in the language they think in. That is why the course ships in eight editions: Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Hindi, Punjabi, Arabic, Urdu and Croatian. The English you practise is the same in every edition; only the help around it changes.

What we want to achieve

We want study time to fit into a driver's week: short lessons, clear explanations and plenty of practice. Road English is a study aid. How much you learn depends on the time you put in, and it does not replace a qualified instructor or official training.

What comes next

We keep adding to the course, including a Virtual Teacher that answers questions in your language and in English. This blog is where we will share practical English for the road and tell you what is new.

Practice these conversations

Road English is a study guide for the everyday English of truck driving, with audio, in 8 languages. There is a free sample.
